Geoffroy Pithon Le Matin, tout recommence. Peindre à Tanger.

In April 2025, Geoffroy Pithon was an artist-in-residence at The Mothership in Tangier, together with Vincent Tuset-Anrès, artistic director of Fotokino. Using resources from the garden, as well as minerals found at the Tangier market or brought from Provence, they created a range of natural colours, which Geoffroy used directly on wrapping paper bought locally. This book records that moment, through a selection of drawings and a handwritten text, Riso printed and inserted into the book.

“We grind the plants, slowly, like novices of an antediluvian science. Tinkerers, discovering the beginnings of this alchemy of garden and studio. We cook and crush the leaves, bark and rocks found in the folds of the garden or in natural cosmetics shops. From them we draw thick, living inks, still in the process of changing. Nothing stabilises: a colour is born, then already shifts towards something else, darker, cloudier, or more open — a herbal infusion, a soup, coffee grounds, chalk, mud.

I paint immediately. On light, almost fragile papers found in the city, commercial papers. The pigments enter the fibre as they would enter soil. It is not a matter of representing, but of letting things take hold. Each surface becomes a terrain: not an image, but a ground.”
