In the 1930s, Bruno Munari drew ‘humorous cartoons’ for Bertoldo and Settebello, accompanying them with ‘puns and strange little stories’ inspired not only by Saul Steinberg, with whom he collaborated, but also by the American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, known as the inventor of the ‘Rube Goldberg machine’.

In this book edited by Stefania di Maria, a researcher and scholar of the relationship between art and design, over 40 cartoons published in Settebello in the late 1930s and now part of the private collection of Bruno Munari's heirs and grandchildren are collected.

In these early experiments Munari played with freedom and later systematised the process, and taking up these prototypes he produced a book (Munari’s Machines, 1942) which is, reading between the lines, a real design manual.

Machines before machines is the new volume in the series of the Quaderni di Spazio Munari, a series of in-depth studies and previously unpublished looks at the work of the great artist and designer starting with the research exhibited at Spazio Munari.

Our work is made out of curiosity and discovery, levity and fun. An unpredictable and uninterrupted process that, in our case, has lasted for 50 years. 50 years of encounters, bandying between art and books, in search of new languages, contaminations, free experimentation.

Corraini Edizioni is a publishing house and an art gallery, as well as a space for experimentation and research: a “publishing workshop” open to artists, illustrators and designers, from both Italy and abroad, to create books and art and design projects. Our work with Bruno Munari stands out among our numerous collaborations; he was a versatile artist and designer who worked steadily with Corraini for many years, giving us the idea of a workshop that is always open to creativity and imagination.

In addition to the already established art gallery, Corraini Edizioni's publishing work ranges betweendesign, art and illustration, often blurring the boundaries between the different disciplines. Naturally, given the association with Munari, particular attention is given to artists’ books for children.
