What happens, then, when contemporary graphic designers appear to take up the torch of an iconography that so-called iconographer-artists had already reclaimed—since the beginning of the last century—from graphic designers themselves, along with their culture and skills?

Founded by François Havegeer and Sacha Léopold, the publishing house Empire sees itself as an extension of the activities related to imagery, graphic design, and artist relations undertaken by the Syndicat studio. Through numerous collaborations in the cultural sphere, the publishing house strives to place the issues of image reproduction, documentation, and circulation at the forefront through catalogues, monographs, theoretical works, journals, posters, and reissues. Empire books also publish Revue Faire.
